This introductory module of the Leadership Empowerment Series is designed to equip OBGYNs with the foundational knowledge and skills needed to lead effectively in maternal and newborn health (MNH). Participants are introduced to key leadership concepts, styles, and frameworks, with an emphasis on moving beyond clinical expertise to influence health systems, policy, and practice at facility, regional, national, and global levels.

The session, facilitated by Prof Anne-Beatrice Kihara, Immediate Past President of FIGO, highlights the critical role of leadership in addressing systemic challenges such as outdated guidelines, inadequate funding, and gaps in evidence-based care while exploring strategies for advocacy, succession planning, mentoring future leaders, and promoting gender-responsive, accountable and transformative leadership. Through this module, OBGYNs are encouraged to champion MNH interventions, foster innovation, and drive sustainable improvements to ensure that no woman or newborn is left behind.
