Championing health explores the critical leadership role of OBGYNs, midwives and other allied health professionals in advancing the health and rights of women and girls worldwide. Led by Prof Andrew Shennan, this module challenges participants to move beyond individual clinical care and consider how leadership, advocacy, and evidence-based action can drive change at the bedside, in communities, and across health systems.

Drawing on real-world examples – including major reductions in maternal mortality in Sierra Leone and the FIGO PremPrep-5 Initiative to improve outcomes for preterm infants – the module demonstrates how simple, cost-effective and scalable interventions can save lives and strengthen health systems. It highlights how combining clinical expertise with social, policy and system-level strategies can address preventable maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality.

Participants are encouraged to recognise their potential as health champions, using leadership to prioritise equity, translate research into practice, support frontline teams and foster collaboration. Ultimately, the module reinforces that effective leadership in health is practical, evidence-driven, and grounded in compassion.
